ABODE // Svetlana

Karen is with is today, introducing our new ABODE series on the blog. She will take it from here….

Home. The most delightful four-letter word one can utter. The haven that gives us rest from the busyness of life and restores us to walk outside its doors, yet again. The moments inside these four walls shape us and have a powerful impact on our life, our family, and our community. Our dwellings influence how we think, feel, and create.

To be welcomed into the abode of Svetlana, a crazy talented photographer and stylist (as her home will evidence!), is truly a treat. A laid-back elegance emanates from Svetlana and describes perfectly the feel of her home. She has no fear of mixing patterns, old and new, or gold and silver, yet the result is stunning. For Svet’s decorating philosophy and tips, read the feature and learn how to add a special touch or two to your abode.

We hope you enjoy the new ABODE series on our blog! Many thanks to Claire for the photos!

2015-07-21_0019How long have you lived here and what made you choose this as your home?

Six months. We bought the home within twenty-four hours of seeing it. We fell in love with the character…the sunroom that I call my Terrain room, the pocket doors, old framing, and black and white kitchen floors.

Describe your personal aesthetic.

Classy and sexy. A little bit of an edge.

How do you desire your home to feel?

Peaceful—a little oasis

Any style muses?

Olivia Palermo and Garance Dore

2015-07-21_00032015-07-21_00042015-07-21_0017What have you changed since moving here?

A lot! We painted every room, painted the floors, redid the deck, and my husband made window boxes.

Do you have any decorating philosophies you live by?

I’m all about thrifting and turning trash into treasure. I like to mix old and new, silver and gold and patterns. I take my time to get nice things, things I know I want in my home.

Is there anything you don’t like about your home or plan to change?

The red barn in the back. I’d like to paint it dark navy or black.

2015-07-21_0020Favorite stores or places to find home décor?

Home Goods, Flower and Home Marketplace, Toll Booth, Anthropologie

Where do you spend most of your time?

My studio—since I work a lot from home

How do you unwind here?

Have a glass of wine, sit and talk to my husband on the patio, or just quietly look through magazines

Any advice for someone looking for a new home?

God knows your heart desires. If one house falls through, trust Him to provide something better.

What effect has your new home had on your marriage?

My husband tells me he loves coming home and loves what I did with our house. It means so much to hear that from him.

1. Never pay full price! Go to the clearance section, visit a thrift store, or repurpose something that someone wants to throw away.

2. Use gold leaf.

3. Try these favorite paint colors…
Benjamin Moore: light pewter, revered pewter, chantilly lace, china white

Sherman Williams: city loft

  1. So super excited about this series; it will definitely be my new favorite! These photos are fabulous.

  2. Katie Hostetter says:

Cannot wait to follow this! I dreamed of doing something similar with my blog and haven’t gotten to it :) This is beautiful!
